If you want to learn how to start a coaching business the first thing you need to do is ask yourself WHY you want to start a coaching business.

It’s not a business you just go into without good reasons and good experience!

Here are some questions to ask when considering starting a coaching business:

Why do you want to start a coaching business?

If someone just told you that you can make a lot of money coaching – that’s the wrong reason.

If you think you can start a coaching business with little to no experience – that’s wrong and also the wrong reason.

Well you COULD start a coaching business with no experience but that wouldn’t be providing a quality service and many would not consider it ethical (myself included).

If you truly want to help others and really enjoy working one on one with clients you’re more likely to be on the right track with this decision.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Starting a Coaching Business:

Have you developed the skills in the area you want to coach?

Have you proven that your methods work, on yourself and others?

How will you coach your clients? On the phone? Via Voxer? Via Email? On webinars? Other?

Are you patient?

Can you explain clearly your concepts, frameworks and strategies to your clients?

How long are you willing to support your coaching clients for? Will you offer long-term coaching or short sprints?

Would your help be better as a one-on-one offer or as a group coaching offer?

How to Start a Coaching Business for Introverts

Traditional coaching format includes some kind of live call where the coach and client get together and discuss goals or work out strategy/steps, etc.

For introverts who would also like to be coaches this is an issue.

You don’t want to book your calendar up with calls!

I hear you. This is the same issue I had and instead of fitting into the norm I just decided to create my own.

My high ticket coaching offer became call-free. People told me that wouldn’t work and it wouldn’t be seen as high value if there wasn’t the “live” component but that’s just not true.

When I do my “coaching without calls” I include many high-value elements. One such is the ability to email an unlimited amount of times. This allows my clients to get help when they need it and move forward fast. This adds MORE value, not less!

Checklist for Starting a Coaching Business

You can find this full checklist in PDF form and with more details in this blog post: coaching business checklist PDF

Confirm you have real value, experience, and results to teach

Develop core coaching qualities: listening, communication, resourcefulness, empathy, motivation

Register your business and obtain necessary licenses/permits

Decide on your coaching business model (calls, no-calls, group, hybrid, etc.)

Set up your coaching website and email list

Create a sales page for your coaching offer

Design your client intake process (welcome, questionnaire, onboarding system)

Prepare systems for client communication and resource sharing

Start selling your coaching offer (ongoing process, not one-time)

Market your coaching business through authentic outreach and connections

Build and nurture a community of people who know, like, and trust you

Avoid high-pressure tactics (e.g., discovery calls if they don’t fit your model)

Continue improving your skills and refining your coaching approach over time

Do You Need a Coaching Certification to Start a Coaching Business?

No, you do not need certification.

The business coaching industry is highly unregulated. This is why you’ll find coaches in all kinds of price ranges and marketing and ethics.

It’s the wild west out there, still!

Be careful in looking for a coach yourself and be aware that you can start without certification.

You’re starting a business like any other that you can do without prerequisite or credentials.

If you DO decide to get a coaching certification beware! There are many people who just throw up a course and a certification. It doesn’t MEAN anything, other than they have a business with a course and they give you a certificate. It definitely doesn’t guarantee quality and qualifications.

So you want to take a step back and think about what you really need and how it will help you create the coaching business of your dreams.

A business that helps your coaching clients achieve great success!

No Shortcut to Starting a Coaching Business

Like every other business there is a whole series of activities you and/or your team will need to work through to get this business up and running.

I’ve always said it’s great to “earn while you learn” and if you want to get started quickly then I would put up a simple offer, have a simple onboarding process and find yourself your first clients.

Build your feedback, your referrals, your systems and grow from there.

I hope this has helped you be confident in your abilities to start and grow your own coaching business.

Wishing you all the best!

I’m excited to share with you everything I know about how to start freelancing.

Let’s jump right in with a quick start list and then I’ll share more details with you:

Quick Start List to Start Freelancing

Step 1. Decide what services you’ll provide and who you’ll serve (targeting).

Step 2. Start networking with anyone and everyone you know. Tell them what you’re about to do.

Step 3. Gather examples and experience that you can share with others.

Step 4. Create a web presence that explains your offers.

Step 5. Hustle for those clients! Tap your connections, make new connections, go to job boards, linked in, etc.

Ok so let’s take this one step at a time.

What Does it Mean to be a Freelancer?

One quick note before we get into the steps of how to start freelancing:

Let’s make sure we’re clear on what it means to be a freelancer.

A freelancer is someone who is self-employed. To start freelancing means you are starting your own business and becoming your own boss.

You’ll be hired by companies on a temporary or potentially longer term contract basis. You will not be an employee.

This gives you total freedom to choose your projects but it also means you are responsible for drumming up all your own business.

Whether you work from your kitchen table, a local coffee shop or an office space freelancing is about doing the work and running a business on your terms!

So let’s dive into the steps to starting a freelancing business.

Steps to Starting a Freelancing Business

Step 1. Decide what freelancer services you will offer

There are plenty of companies out there that need help and will be looking to work with an experienced freelancer.

While you may not have any clients yet you can still relay your experience from the work you’ve done in your job or in your own business, etc.

If you have zero experience in something then step 0 will be to get some. Work on projects for free or for yourself. Study up, practice and have something to show before looking for clients.

Now, once you know you have something to offer as a freelancer you’ll want to make sure it’s something people are paying for.

Here are some common freelancing job categories:

Writer (article, blogs, emails, website, etc)

Website designers

Social media marketers

Graphics designer

Photography & Videography

Editing (content, videos, audios)

Bookkeeping

Virtual Assistants

Ads

More

The list of potential freelance jobs is pretty endless.

Find something that people need, are willing to pay for and that you are great at doing! Then you’ll have a great start to becoming a freelancer.

Step 2. Start Networking

I’ve personally launched a freelance agency building websites and doing email marketing for local business owners.

After I made this decision I immediately set to connecting with a couple of friends who I knew would support me.

Turns out not only did they think it was a great idea, they wanted to promote me to their audiences, which were a great fit for my services.

Don’t negate the value of person to person connection! It’s very powerful.

While the internet is a great place for “self-serve” some things still need that personal touch! When you are offering a service one of the absolute best ways to get new clients has been and remains word of mouth.

How do you have word of mouth when you are brand new?

Talk… you gotta do the talking. Build on any reputation you already have. Share the value you bring. And maybe sooner than later a friend of a friend may need exactly what you have to offer.

How to start freelancing by networking. Ideas:

Email people who may know someone who needs your services.

Talk to your in-person friends and colleagues, and hand out business cards.

Get on Linked-In and network.

Create profiles on freelancing sites such as Freelancer and Upwork.

Go to industry events, meetings and meetups and get to know people – make sure they get to know you, too, and what you do.

Step 3. Gather Examples and Experience You Can Share With Others – Your Portfolio

If you don’t have a customer portfolio then offer to do some work for free for someone you know could use it.

Or just create your own examples for a “pretend” client that you can showcase.

When I decided to offer website services for local small business owners I didn’t have any specific examples so I decided to create sites of the ideal clients.

If you’ve already got examples and results, great! Then move on to Step 4

Step 4. Create a Web Presence that Explains Your Offers

Now some people start freelancing and get booked up with clients so fast that they don’t even have time to work on their website.

This is a good AND possibly a not so good thing.

While you may get a rush of clients when you open shop there are likely to be times when your freelance business falls into a lull.

It’s a good idea to take the time from the start to get your marketing, AKA in this case your website, set up and ready to work for you when you need it.

If you need help building a website you can see this course on how to build a site in WordPress (by yours truly).

What to put on your freelancer website:

Home Page – Introduce yourself and your business, highlight your offers and why they should hire you.

About Page – Tell people about YOU, your experience, what you can do and don’t forget WHY. People are drawn to stories and someone who’s truly passionate about what they do.

Services Page – On this page you can detail your services.

Contact Page – How to get in contact with you so they can request a call or hire you.

Blog Page – If you want to use content marketing as a long-term strategy a blog is a great choice!

Step 5. Hustle for Clients and Tap Your Connections

Bonus Step. KEEP Marketing

Even after you’ve gained clients do not stop marketing. It could be that blog for content marketing, social media marketing or maybe email marketing.

Whatever you choose to do build it into your business because you never know when you might lose a big client and need to quickly find another.

If you keep up on your marketing this is going to be a significantly easier task.

I once worked in a coworking space with a freelance virtual assistant who had three clients. Within the space of a couple of months she lost all three clients and did not have any other income streams or marketing in place. This is risky business!

Keep marketing and, when you can find space, build in other income streams. For freelancers offering courses is a natural fit, because you already have experience in something you know is in demand as people are already paying you for it.

You could turn those skills into a course so that those who can’t hire a freelancer yet can DIY. This won’t take away from your own potential clients. I’ve actually found that when I sell a course on the service I offer I get MORE clients. After people take the DIY they realize it’s too much work to do themselves and then they hire me to do it instead!

I hope this helps you understand how to start freelancing and be your own boss.

This is an exciting time. In case you have other concerns I thought of a couple more questions you might want answered…

Can you Create Lifestyle Freedom as a Freelancer?

I personally define lifestyle freedom as being able to work when you want, where you want, with who you want and how you want.

This fits the freelancer profile!

You can absolutely have lifestyle freedom as a freelancer if you choose your clients wisely and only work on the projects that light you up.

Lifestyle Freedom for me is ALSO about leverage and time-freedom.

So if you’re working 60 hours a week, feeling completely burnt out and not enjoying life then, no, that’s not lifestyle freedom.

Be very purposeful about what you build and you can create the freedom you crave while working on the projects that light you up.

Conclusion on How to Start Freelancing

Your most important activity is going to be telling everyone you know, constantly, what you’re offering.

This word of mouth is crucial to your success as a freelancer.

Wishing you all the very best as you create your lifestyle freedom as a freelance professional!

Coaching can be for introverts, too!

I’ve been a coach for about 15 years now. In that time I spent many years trying to fit myself into a coaching model that did NOT work for me!

Filling my calendar to the brim with calls = OMG I need a week to nap, KWIM (know what I mean)?

Doing “discovery calls” = EW I don’t want make people feel backed into a corner to sign up with me!

Talking for one hour = Oh I definitely need to recharge, now!

Trying to keep the conversation “focused” = NAW let’s just chat and have a good call?

This model needed adjusting to fit my introvert ways.

No Full Calendar for This Introvert!

So instead of filling my calendar, I filled my client roster with people who were like me. People who didn’t NEED a coaching call in order to take action!

Instead of doing discovery calls I made really clear calls to action and detailed everything, including the price, on my coaching sales page.

Instead of talking on the phone for an hour once a week or even once a month, I set my clients up with unlimited email or voice chat and we just get stuff done! Action-taking clients are THE BEST CLIENTS.

And instead of trying to keep the conversation on a call focused I didn’t need to. No calls = no worries. When a client emails or voxers me I respond as needed and I WELCOME life stuff because it all is relevant and now we have time to cover it all.

I just LOVE this format of coaching that I’ve named “Coaching Without Calls”.

I’ve had so much success with it, too.

Here’s what one sweet client had to say about it:

Coaching Without Calls is the Ultimate Coaching for Introverts!

Now you can:

Scale your coaching business – work with dozens or more clients at a time! The unlimited, fast access means you’re not needing to use as much time to get them moving along on their goals.

Be more flexible with your work – you can answer clients on the go rather than having to be in your office for a zoom call.

Keep your calendar clear – this is my favorite part! My calendar keeps clear while I’m working with a number of clients and everyone is more than happy.

How to Coach Without Calls

It may take some time to get used to this concept and some clients will EXPECT calls.

This is totally OK. You can train those clients on what is so awesome about this kind of coaching.

Here are some of the steps to coaching without calls for introverts:

Decide on your coaching offer.

Maybe it’s you and a client on Voxer. Could be easy email coaching. Maybe it’s a private group that your client can search and respond to threads (my favorite as it has multi-media).

Create your coaching intake process and materials.

What will you do when you sign a client? How will they learn how it all works? Will you do an intake call? Get this all worked out before you take on any new client.

Create your coaching sales page.

Make sure your offer is clear. Since you are doing a different take on typical coaching you’ll want to make sure people really get it before signing up. AND they should be excited about it! It’s all in how you present it.

Promote your coaching.

Of course you’ll need to let people know about your offer! I love email marketing and some other supplementary methods to get the word out. The marketing ecosystem… it all works together.

Onboard and work with your clients.

Get a pattern down where you check in on your clients regularly. Weekly check ins and daily answers will keeping everyone moving along smoothly!

Coaching Without Calls is one awesome way to help people create MAJOR impact in their own lives.

I’m a BIG believer of coaching myself. Here’s an instagram post I made on how it’s changed my life in a couple of ways:

Full Transparency. I do accountability coaching.

And so my post is absolutely biased towards it being a good thing.

My opinion on accountability coaching doesn’t come from my own services fully, though.

It comes from the fact that as an easily distracted online business owner I have used accountability coaching and all forms of accountability for my business with great success!

If productivity is worth money to you then by default Accountability Coaching will make more of it for you if it works.

And it’s ALWAYS worked for me.

Because the secret to making money, getting results and helping people in this world is to DO THINGS.

Do enough of those things and you’ll get results.

If you’re struggling to just sit down and do the work more days than not then an accountability coach is very likely to mean money in the bank!

There’s a key to success here:

You need to be the kind of person who doesn’t let other people down. My previous accountability coach, Nicole Dean, sent me to a test on this called The Four Tendencies Quiz < see it there.

I’m an “Obliger” which means when I commit to doing something to someone else then I do it.

If you’re a “Rebel” then accountability is not likely to work for you because the rebel resists outer and inner expectations.

However if you do respond well to outer expectations then accountability may be perfect for you!

Ways to do Accountability:

Accountability Coach – A coach is going to be by your site offering you advice, insights, help as you make a list of things you need to do and then work through getting them done. Your coach will often check in with you, help you when you feel stuck and give you new ideas you wouldn’t think of.

Accountability Planner – You can buy a planner and self-motivate but this is a tricky one especially if self-motivation hasn’t been working. It’s best to combine this with another method if you feel you need true accountability.

Accountability Partner – In my 22+ years in business I’ve had a good number of accountability partners. When the match is right it’s an awesome way to get more done!

Accountability Group – What if you get accountable with others doing the same? This is what I asked when I started my own accountability group challenge that I now run month after month in my community. It works!

How to do Accountability & Get Results

No matter if you have a one on one coach, do group accountability, use a planner or have an accountability partner the format of accountability is generally the same.

You check in with someone to tell them what you will work on and then you check back with them to tell them you did it.

Simple. But not always easy. This is why we get support.

Business is a roller coaster of emotions, ups and downs, wins and loses and that can take you out (of productivity or even business itself) if you’re not careful.

Having others give you another perspective and angle to KEEP working towards your goals is priceless!

How to Find an Accountability Coach

If you’re looking for a coach I would invite you to check out my services on my accountability coaching page.

If I’m not the right coach for you then I would recommend you check with people you’ve worked with in the past. I personally only hire coaches I’m very familiar with and have followed over time.

If you can’t come up with someone then also ask friends. They may know someone as well.

I realize not everyone has the budget for a coach but still wants more productivity and accountability.

If you are the kind of person who works well with your own expectations (the “Upholder”) then you might like my self-implemented Accountability Planner.

If you like to be accountable to others then I have an incredibly effective group Accountability Challenge that is only $10/month or a $95 one-time payment.

And then of course I do have the Accountability Coaching for those who want a hands-on, one on one coach by their site (I often call it a Business BFF, too).

Whatever you decide and however you decide to do it, I’m rooting for you!

If you’d love to coach more clients but don’t want to book your business up with zoom calls then this video is for you.

As a mom of two I don’t want to be on zoom calls all day long.

It takes up a ton of time to work with clients weekly like this, it just didn’t feel like a productive use of it. Without calls clients need to focus on taking ACTION.

I’ve found with clients they feel like showing up to the actual all is an action – but it’s not – it’s all talk. You get results by taking action and that is where this strategy comes into play.

What does it mean to coach without calls?

It means we won’t do calls.

This is great for introverts. You will find people who this method just doesn’t suit but you will also find clients who are THRILLED to not have to go on a call.

Those of us who love to get things done this is a powerful mode of coaching! I don’t just teach this method. I’ve done it for over ten years and I’ve also been coached through email coaching myself.

One of my favorite methods of coaching without calls is to focus on accountability. It’s a simple daily action of the client checking in and telling you what they will work on. Then they come back and tell you what they got done.

If you love getting on calls and that’s what you want to do as a coach this isn’t the method for you.

How to put Coaching Without Calls into place:

You can use any method of communication that serves your clients. Some common methods I’ve used over the years are:

Email Coaching

Voxer Coaching

Facebook Group Coaching (or I now use Heartbeat – less distractions!)

In my coaching offers I’ve always offered unlimited coaching Monday through Friday. I respond to my clients fairly quickly (usually a few hours or less) but I tell them to expect a reply in about 24 hours or less.

Three steps to working with clients with no calls

Have a great onboarding process. Give your new clients immediate value with a good onboarding questionnaire that has them look at their business. Just the act of filling out the form is valuable for their business

Deliver value through training materials or automation emails. I include my courses in my coaching offers. Sometimes my clients get EVERY course I offer (if they buy a large package) or they get the courses they need as they need it. Then I invite them to go through the courses they need as they need them.

Follow Up.

Why no calls coaching is so valuable (to client and business coach)

You get the freedom to live your life as you wish while STILL working with clients. You won’t be tied to being in a certain place at a certain time every week or month x all your clients.

Your clients get fast answers which leads to fast results.

You can scale your business in a bigger way and work with more clients because the effectiveness is high and the time demand is not as high.

If you’re new to affiliate marketing or have only dabble in it up to this point, I thought now would be a great time to give you some of my very best affiliate marketing tips:

1. Do it for the RIGHT reasons

Affiliate marketing just for passive income or just for the money are not good enough reasons and they’re not going to get you very far in your results. Share products, programs and services that you believe in ONLY.

Become an affiliate to add value to your people’s lives. NEVER share something just to make a buck and always be sure it’s something you’d personally invest in before you ask your customers and subscribers to do so.

2. Buy the product yourself.

If you can, buy the product yourself. How are you going to promote something you’ve never bought yourself?

Now there are situations where you trust the product creator or have some relationship with them – that works. OR you might just simply be listing products you think LOOK good, and you tell your audience that.

I actually did do that on this post about under desk treadmills because I knew people would ask which one I bought. The one I bought isn’t online anymore so I found similar ones and I told my audience that.

It’s about TRUST. If you’re promoting just for a quick buck, they’ll know.

I’ll tell you whenever I’ve bought something as an affiliate and told my people I’ve invested in it I’ve sold WAY more than when I don’t. They know I’m willing to put my money where my mouth is, and that’s important!

3. Share what you love, what speaks to you, what fits NATURALLY into what you’re doing.

I call this natural affiliate marketing and it’s so much easier and more effective to add affiliate offers into the natural flow of your business. Don’t take products out of left field that have NO logical fit into what you’re doing.

Affiliate marketing works best when you share what you’re doing and incorporate your offers into that. A great example is when I teach people how to set up WordPress sites the most natural thing in the world to recommend to them is the hosting company that I use and love. I make sales on that every single time, and a lot of them!

Affiliate marketing does NOT need to make you feel like a sleezy car salesman and it shouldn’t. It should feel NATURAL and when it does the sales come in a very easy and non-painful way!

That’s why I created my course Lifestyle Affiliate Marketing. In it I teach you how to incorporate affiliate marketing into your business to help you grow lifestyle freedom!

So you’re considering working with a coach in 2025? Smart move!

I hired my first coach around 2008 when my business was very small. Over that first year I learned so much about how to grow a business and a ton of stuff on mindset (aka your thinking).

I’m tired of trying to fit everything I want to share with you in a single email so I thought I’d take it to a PDF to give you all the information I think you need to make a smart decision about whether hiring a coach in 2025 is for you and whether I’m the right coach for you!

Let’s start with WHY hire a coach

There are quite a few really good reasons to do so:

1. To build a business similar to the business the coach has.

You want to find a coach that has a similar business to the one you want to create. If you don’t you could be majorly wasting your time.

For example if you want to make money blogging by putting ads and affiliate marketing links on your blog I am NOT your coach. If you want to sell courses, coaching and maybe a membership through email marketing – I AM your coach!

2. To have someone to hold you accountable.

One of the greatest challenges of a business owner is to do the work. We have no one to be accountable to so we are challenged to hold ourselves accountable. And that does not always work!

You can check in with your coach to tell them what you are going to work on and then check back to say you did it. A simple daily action that can be so incredibly powerful!

3. To get insights and advice based on experience.

Your coach probably has something you don’t have in terms of experience and insights into how to do the thing you want to do.

It’s likely a good coach is going to spot things you’re tripping up against before you ever realize you’re doing so. This saves you time, money and frustration!

4. To have a business BFF!

This might sound a little silly but it’s for real a great benefit of a coach!

Most of the time there isn’t anyone in our lives who really gets what we do. And yes we might meet people here and there who get it but they’re busy with their businesses, too. When you hire your coach they can be there to be your Business Bestie. A good coach will cheer you on, motivate you and inspire you.

Next I think it’s important to cover how coaching can be used, especially if you plan to work with me as your coach.

How to Use Coaching:

Every coach is going to be different in what they offer in their coaching package and so that is going to largely determine how to use the coaching.

With my coaching package you get one on one help with me (Angela Wills) via my community in Heartbeat. This comes in the form of a private group area for text based chat and an audio chat via DM or right within the group.

The one challenge I find some people having is they don’t show up. They basically “ghost” me and I don’t hear from them for weeks, even months and in some cases never again.

I’m assuming it ends up being so long in between that they get too embarrassed to come back and say anything but I would NEVER judge someone – so if you ever coach with me and you disappear for two weeks please come back! You’re ALWAYS welcome back!

That said if you know you’re likely to disappear and not show up and communicate in coaching then it’s probably not for you. Wait until you’re sure you’re going to make good use of what’s available to you!

Does Coaching Work?

Yes, absolutely coaching works!

With a caveat – you have to work it.

It’s not a magic pill of course.

Literally once a new coaching client said “OK, work your magic!” and I had to make sure it was really clear that I do NOT do magic. You can’t pay a coach and call it a day.

Show up – communicate – do the work – be consistent. This is how coaching works. It works because YOU work. There’s no way around that.

What coaching is really great for is helping you figure out what work to do, or how to do it better, or faster or more efficiently so you make more money.

Personally I’ve found coaching working for me even 10 YEARS later, too! My coach said so many things to me during coaching that I just wasn’t ready for. The thing with a coach is we can only plant seeds… YOU are the one who needs to grow them.

So those seeds my coach planted were just stored, waiting and finally one day a little seedling started to grow and I started to see a new thought growing that improves my business.

What a powerful way to invest in my business – all these years later it’s STILL paying off.

Ok Let’s talk investment, next…

What Does Coaching Cost?

If you’ve run across coaching offers out there you’ll know they can range vastly in pricing.

Some coaches will charge you $200/month while others might charge you $20,000/month and they both promise to help you grow your business!

Be VERY wary of the coaches who won’t tell you anything about HOW you’re going to grow that business when you coach with them. Instead they tout the money, money, money you’ll make and they are making the assumption that you want the money so much you don’t care what you’ve gotta do.

YUCK.

I’m very clear in my marketing and my coaching offer.

I’m coaching you on how to build online offers – such as ebooks, courses, membership, coaching, etc. I’m going to coach you on all the various aspects of making that work and marketing it mainly through email marketing because it’s so darn effective!

So my potential coaching clients are very clear on how they’ll make money. And the clients who work with me are ALREADY doing that. They’re now looking to transform that business they’ve got going into a business that gives them MORE time freedom while making them MORE money!

The coaching investment with me is $3750 (for 2024). It will be going up to $4750 in 2025. This is for a full year and I’m very aware it’s not high priced. However I’m happy to charge that FOR NOW, I may end up doubling that in 2026 – we shall see.

The thing with coaching is you gotta look at it in terms of ROI. What kind of Return on Investment can you get in a year? Certainly more than $5k in profits if you do the work!

I have listed out my years in business over 22 years and the first year I started selling digital products I made $22k and it’s only grown and grown ever since.

For you to invest $3750 in yourself and your business and have it NOT feel like an expense what you need is belief.

Belief you could have a $22k year as a result of the support, then a $40k year, then a $60k year and on and on. Too often people are selling you an unrealistic dream. The reality is most people grow a bit at a time. 20% growth per year in my experience is a pretty reasonable expectation.

Do you want to aim to double your income every year? YES, of course! Set those goals high and that’s what I’m here to help you with as a coach. THEN take the actions to get the results and return on that investment!

So these are the things I’d love you to know and understand as my potential coaching client. A coach is absolutely not a quick fix or a magic pill but they can be a valued and a valuable asset to your business if used and approached in the right way.

I used to hate coaching because I thought I had to do discovery calls and then weekly calls with clients. Then I realized I could do coaching MY way.

The idea of being “booked solid” NEVER appealed to me. YUCK… who wants their calendar packed with calls? NOT me. I’m an introvert and like my quiet time, a lot. I’d much rather type up replies in silence then try to sort my thoughts on an hour-long call.

With email coaching both the client and I have to think through our responses and thoughts purposefully, making for a great coaching experience!

What is Email Coaching?

Email coaching is when you set a client up to send you regular emails where they are supported by a coach.

It’s as simple as that, really. The coaching and client relationship is a personal one. It depends on how you run your business and how the client prefers to communicate.

Some ways you can do email coaching include:

Accountability email coaching – where the client emails you daily to tell you what they’re working on.

Question-based email coaching – where the client reaches out as they have questions while working with you.

Assignment email coaching – where you assign the client work and they complete it then reach out for next steps.

Who is it for?

Email coaching is for anyone who wants it.

The Advantages of Email Coaching (for the client)

Introverts love this style of coaching because getting on actual calls literally DRAINS our energy. Sending an email typically does not.

The Advantages of Email Coaching (for the coach)

From the coach perspective this isn’t just for introverts. It’s for the coach who wants to keep their calendar light and clear yet they would love to work one-on-one with clients.

I really dreaded offering coaching until I fully embraced email coaching and removed calls from my offering altogether. For years I still offered a once a month call option because I feared that clients might not pick up coaching if that wasn’t at least offered. I found out my fears were completely unfounded as I sold more coaching than ever AFTER I took away all calls.

I think this is because as the coach this worked best for me so I was more excited to promote this kind of coaching.

You Can Cancel These When You do Email Coaching:

So let’s talk about what you don’t have to do first, and why that’s awesome:

NO Discovery Calls – I don’t know about you but the LAST thing I ever wanted to do was get someone on a call just to find out if we’re a good fit. Then have this awkward moment where I ask them if they want to sign up. Also, as a potential client myself I do not trust Discovery Calls for one second. I’ve been on too many manipulative ones. PLUS, as an introvert I literally won’t even bother looking at working with a coach if the only way to find out about the coaching is with a discovery call. So they lose my sale.

NO Coaching Calls – When I have a coaching call it takes up my entire day. This is because I don’t feel like I can focus before the call on anything else. So I spend time thinking and preparing for it. Then after the call my energy is drained. As a mom then my time is up as I need to go pick up my daughter from school. Day done. With email coaching no calls are necessary!

Now let’s get into the things that are awesome:

Time to Think – I give better answers when I can take the time to think through the question. This gives my client a better chance at using my response effectively. This can be done easily with email coaching. You don’t need to respond immediately.

Work Coaching Around Your Life – Some coaches with a full client base are just go, go, go all day long! Email coaching is much more chill. You don’t have to hustle from call to call all day long.

Just as Much, or MORE, Value – You can’t convince me otherwise that email coaching is very high value. You can add other elements to your coaching so that every interaction is so helpful to your coaching clients. I love to record videos with Loom to respond to my coaching clients. This can be used to demonstrate something or just to respond verbally to something they’ve sent you.

What Can You Charge for Email Coaching?

One of my friends was about to offer email coaching at a REDUCED rate to her regular coaching.

I told her not to do this.

People are hiring you for your experience, skills and knowledge. This doesn’t change just because the format has. So charge your regular coaching rates – coaching with you is coaching with you – that’s the value not the way it’s delivered!

How to Start Email Coaching Online:

You can start coaching as simply as you like – and I recommend it!

Don’t overcomplicate your offers. Keep them light to begin and then add more to them as necessary.

If you’d like help with learning how to do this I have created a course based on over ten years of email coaching with my own clients, it’s called Coaching Without Calls < you can see it there.

For delivery you can use Gmail. I do prefer to set my clients up in Basecamp with a project. This way we can set to-do items, upload files and have a record of emails.

I’m excited for you!

Email coaching is a wonderful way to support your clients and keep your calendar clear. There is a market for it and you can deliver high value using this method. Wishing you the best as you go for it!

Here’s your checklist for starting a coaching business:

Starting a Coaching Business Checklist

Let’s Talk About What it Takes to Start a Coaching Business

There are a lot of online business coaching leaders out there telling people that ANYONE can start a coaching business. This simply is not true!

Please don’t fall for the idea that you can just coach people to coach people who coach people! This is a completely unethical way to build a business.

So before I even give you the starting a coaching business checklist I would recommend you come to the checklist with this very important realization:

A true and ethical business coach is someone with REAL value to teach. Someone with experience, who’s going to help guide their clients based on their own RESULTS and EFFORTS in a true business. A real online business coach does not sell coaching based on income claims because they know they can not promise these results. They sell their services and it’s entirely up to the client to get the results.

Now let’s get into the qualities of a good coach.

Qualities of a Good Coach

If you’ve passed the initial check and you feel that you do have high value to bring to a coaching client, amazing!

If you haven’t all is not lost! You can easily develop some great skills over the next 6-12 months that you can teach others and return the coaching format at that time.

Now if you have decided you’re good to go here are some qualities of a good coach:

Great listener – Not just for hearing the things your customers say but also the things they don’t. You’re listening for hidden issues or stopping blocks your clients may be experiencing.

Excellent communicator – If what you’re saying isn’t connecting you’re going to need to find another way.

Resourceful – You may have your own suite of digital products and tools you can refer your client to. You’ll want to be resourceful in how you refer them and what you offer, giving them the best options for their needs.

Empathy – Conflict will come up, people will have issues you need to understand so it’s important to be empathetic. I’ve never been drawn to a coach who can kick my butt. I want someone kind and understanding.

Motivating – Your clients look for you to be excited and to be a rock when they feel down and lacking the energy. Being the kind of person who can motivate and inspire is important in a coach!

Me brainstorming at the beach!

Starting a Coaching Business Checklist

Ok let’s get into it! Here are some of the steps to take when starting a coaching business. Use this checklist to move your business forward and start attracting your idea clients!

Get Business Licenses and Registrations

Blah this is not a fun part but do check with your state (or province) and town regulations and rules about opening a business.

This will depend if you run as a sole proprietorship, an LLC or if you run from your home or from an office. Government and local business support groups (Chamber of Commerce, etc) are great places to start looking up information on what you need to know.

Decide on Your Coaching Business Model

What kind of coaching business are you opening? HOW will you coach?

Outline your coaching business model so that you can them move forward to pull all the pieces into place to make it happen.

My favorite model is Coaching Without Calls. For many years I HATED offering coaching as part of my online business model and then I realized I just hated booking my calendar up with calls. Also calls waste time in my opinion. I’d rather use that time to do the work! I’ve created a full out course on how to do coaching without calls here: Coaching Without Calls Business Coach Course

Set up Your Coaching Business Website & Email List

Maybe you are adding coaching to an existing business. Like I’ve done here at Living Lifestyle Freedom.

If that’s the case you don’t need to create an entirely new website. I have a coaching information page here you can check out as an example.

If you are making your coaching business your sole business offering then you will likely want a whole new website.

I’ve also decided to create a website for my coaching offerings of business coaching for women at my AngelaWills.com site. This allows me to diversify my business and traffic. Giving me opportunities to pivot should the need ever arise, or if I ever want to sell LivingLifestyleFreedom.com I still have another site running (this would be in many, many years as I love the growth my site is experiencing).

If you have no idea how to setup your business website and email list I offer training on this through my Make Websites from Scratch course. You can see that training here.

Create a Salespage for Your Coaching Offer

Now that you’ve got a website you’ll want to create a specific and direct coaching offer page.

See my coaching for women in business offer here as an example.

I use ThriveCart for my salespages. You can create a salespage in ThriveCart or you can create an order form that you can embed on your salespage. Learn more about ThriveCart through this post.

As of this writing I am working on moving all my salespages into WordPress using the Elementor page builder because I want the pages to be found and searchable through the search engines and on my website.

Create a Client Intake Process

When your clients first sign up with you they are the most excited they’ll ever be.

Make sure you’re ready to roll out the red carpet and welcome them properly!

Create a client intake process. This is going to be specific to your business as it will depend on whether you do calls or not, how often you meet with your client, what you specifically work with them on, etc.

Here is my client intake process (I do coaching without calls – meaning there are no live calls beyond the initial call):

Client is welcomed personally with an email.

Send client the Coaching Client Questionnaire.

Add client to my Coaching Customer are in ThriveCart (this is where they can access resources).

Add client to my project management system which facilitates emails back and forth for coaching.

If you’d like to model this method I give you access to use my questionnaire inside of Coaching Without Calls.

Sell Your Coaching

One of the scariest parts for many coaches and business owners is the selling.

This does not need to be scary!

For this final step of the starting a coaching business checklist you’re going to need to realize that this is very much an ongoing process. Day after day, month after month and year after year you’re going to build up a community of people who love and admire you, who want to learn from you and who are happy to pay you to coach them when the time is right.

Marketing Your Coaching Business

There are so many ways you can market your business, meet new people and let them know about your offer.

My favorite way is to treat people like people. Make friends and true connections and gently let them know what you have to offer!

I get the most coaching clients from one to one outreach. And NO we are not talking about pretending to be interested in someone you don’t know on Instagram until you find a way to bring up your coaching offer – yuck!

Personal Marketing Outreach

I reach out to people who know me and my work. They’re usually people who’ve bought many products from me already and are a fan. They’re people I think would be my ideal client and are likely to say HELL YES! Those are the people I gently reach out to. I often literally write “no pressure” because I absolutely AM NOT interested in pressuring them.

Time and again I’ve proven that you can simply match the right people with the right offers and they will buy. No pressure tactics, no manipulation, nothing that doesn’t feel GOOD to do. We are in the business of helping people, not making them buy something they don’t want.

Oh and by the way you might notice I didn’t mention Discovery Calls. Another “yuck” in my books. I never do Discovery Calls yet I sell multiple thousand dollar coaching programs without a single call. These methods work and you don’t need a high pressure call to sell high end coaching.

That wraps up your “Starting a Coaching Business Checklist”.

I hope this helps you as you launch your coaching business!
