This is not professional opinion.
I’m not an addiction professional.

But I AM a mom who’s had a wicked habit of spending far too many hours on social media.

I know I’m not alone.

As a business owner I also am very aware of how there are benefits to social media but they can not be at the sacrifice of my mental health!

Social Media Marketing Strategies for Business Owners Who Don’t Want to LIVE on Social Media!

Block the feed on computer and on the phone – Stop the mindless scrolling! This is one of the absolutely most wasteful things we do on social. Did you REALLY get anything from 45 mins of random videos.

Now some would argue that it’s useful to do that. That our brain needs a break and this is how it got it. That may be true but there are better ways to give yourself a break.

Give yourself an alternative – Rather than try to force yourself OFF reels or Tik Tok’s feed or whatever, prepare ahead with an alternative to scrolling. Maybe it’s a walk outside, or maybe it’s doing that crochet piece or playing a game with your kid. There are so many better choices, be ready with a few when you feel the urge to scroll

Save a bookmark to a group you need – There is one lone group that I currently need to check regularly for my business on Facebook. If I just allow myself to click through I end up in the feed or checking someone’s profile.

Avoid this by setting up a bookmark straight to the group. Facebook is a MASTER at trying to have you end up scrolling the feed and being a cash cow for their ads

Turn off notices – This is typical advice but I’m adding it in case you forgot! Keep those phone, computer and email notices OFF. Turn everything off that interrupts you in your day and your work.

Focused Business Uses for Social Media

Do research in groups if needed – If you are in some groups that can help your business then give yourself permission to get in there and do some very focused research. Remember that’s not permission to just waste time! Get in and get out.

Connect with customers – Another good use of social media is potentially to connect with your customers or clients where they are. I personally prefer to use my own community software for this, Heartbeat, but sometimes people are not on there and I do connect on Facebook or Instagram.

Marketing – Of course posting content to build connect or promote your products is always good business practice. You may want to use another app to schedule them like Tailwind or Cinchshare, to keep yourself off the apps.

Protect Your Sanity and Mental Health

I’ve talked before about how I’ve felt that social media negatively affects my mental health if I’m not careful.

I know I’m not the only one.

Do what you need to do to protect your mental health!

I’ll be the first to admit I’m extremely TORN on social media.

I’m on again off again. Love/Hate.

In 2022 I was totally OFF – close my accounts. I wrote about what it’s like living without social media here.

Now, in 2025, I am at a crossroads, again.

I got back on social but I don’t make money, I post sporadically at best, I have a few hundred followers and my heart is JUST NOT IN IT.

And why should it be. I talk a LOT about the 80/20 rule or Pareto’s Principal and that you need to CUT the things that are taking up a lot of time but giving you little results. Social media is that for me. Maybe you, too?

Why You Might Consider Not Relying on Social Media for Your Business

Here are the reasons why you might be better of NOT running your business with or on social media:

Mental Health – The more time I spend on social media the more of a mental health decline I notice in myself. It’s NOT good and it’s not something to ignore. I want a healthy mind and no matter how much I’ve tried to “hack” my feeds they bring me stupid, stupid, mind numbing useless stuff lol! Yes I can block my feed but then what? What am I even doing on there at that point. If everyone’s posting and blocking each other’s feeds isn’t it just an echo chamber for the benefit of the platform itself?

Unsustainable Workload – The amount of work you need to do to get traction on social media is a LOT and it feels so unsustainable to me. Do I want to post 10 stories and 1 reel a day for the rest of my life? No, not really. Plus all the photos, b-roll, UGH. It’s just not even fun to me. Maybe for someone who loves that, yes. Me, no.

Video Ready – Look I’m not trying to be a model and I looks are not my top priority but as a woman I definitely feel a pressure to “get ready” for video. That means fresh shower, taking at least 45 mins on my hair, another 15 min on makeup and finding an outfit that doesn’t make me look like the hot mess mom that I am. And YES I could show up “as I am” but we all know that’s making a statement in this beauty obsessed world and I’m not ready to evangelize like that at this point in my life.

Trolls – There’s a dark and nasty side of social media that I’ve seen too often from the big influencers. I know those with smaller followers get it to a degree, too. We’re talking about things like comments on your body and how gross you are, death threats when people don’t agree with you, character attacks and sexual aggression. In the comments, in the DMs and on Reddit threads. I KNOW this happens when you get more know no matter if you’re on social media or not but it seems especially bad and the platforms do NOTHING to stop it (yay free speech). I refuse to subject myself to that. If it came down to signing up for abuse or going to get a job I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’d pick the job!

I’m Not Your Product – Social media platforms make money off attention. This is why they allow the negative comments, they literally have been known to show negativity far more often because it spreads and gets people engaging way more than positive stuff. WHY would I want to be part of that system?

Not Looking for Attention – Now I know this sounds wrong as I am a business owner and I SHOULD be seeking attention. But – there’s a big performance aspect to social that I’m just NOT down for. I have never wanted to be the center of attention and it feels like I need to be that way to be successful on social media. I’m not your influencer that’s for sure. I’m your “by your side” person who says let’s figure this out together. Let’s be in community. Let’s connect.

It’s Not Actually Social – Social media is anything but social. People are more lonely than ever. Social media is disconnecting us! I saw a friend post this:
It’s so true! How often do we ACTUALLY talk to people anymore yet we could talk all day long if we wanted to. Instead we’re too “busy” looking at our phones and being lonely. It’s sad and I want no part of it! I want to connect in REAL ways now more than ever.

Such a Freaking WASTE of Time! – This goes back to the 80/20 rule but even more than that let’s say I did it in my “free” time, my “fun” time… it’s still just a black hole that you come out of after a few hours and feel as EMPTY as the hole itself. I know I’m being dramatic but for reals.

You Never Win – I picture social media as an ever moving goal post. Once you get 10,000 subscribers you’re going to want more. Once you get a viral video you’ll want another. The goals will just keep bigger and bigger to what end? To always be the biggest, the best, the one who gets the sponsorships? And I see people getting bigger and bigger with their followings and getting more and more outrageous with click bait and the kind of posts they make. I have to wonder if they weren’t doing it for clout, would they? Are they now driven by the growth only? THAT is NOT a Lifestyle Freedom Business for sure!

Well holy hell! This post was written in about 15 mins and I had a LOT to say obviously! This tells me my gut feeling to get the heck out of dodge with my social media is correct.

At the very least I need to take a week and take a break!

I’m going to start with my own social media detox which is here.

So in the title of this post I also told you I’d tell you how I do business WITHOUT social media. Let’s cover that now:

How to do Business Without Social Media

We all know business existed and thrived long before social media ever did.

But now some say you just can’t do business without it. It’s a “necessary evil”.

In my experience you can do without it. I’ve made next to nothing from social media. Maybe a few thousand out of over $1.2 million. It’s certainly negligible. I also know people who do nothing for business whatsoever on social and have very, very successful businesses.

Here’s what I do instead to have a growing, thriving business:

Email Marketing – My emails hit inboxes and get opens and clicks. I can see what’s working and what’s not. If you use email marketing for your business you’ll OWN your email list. Now you can take that list anywhere, unlike your social media followers. It’s even an actual asset that you could sell with your business if you ever wanted to exit. Email marketing is my tried and true! It’s been working for me for about 15 YEARS and I still email daily. That is connection and profits from regular emails to my list.

Membership – I have a membership that allows me for regular, recurring income month after month.
If you start a membership and get to a certain income per month then you are OFF the hamster wheel. You won’t have to “dance for the people” just to get paid. Now you have more freedom, more peace, more security. Subscription offers work, too. But I HIGHLY recommend seeking out recurring income for your business as often and as soon as possible!

Affiliates – My affiliates send me targeted subscribers and sales. I LOVE them! They are people with their own email lists and an understanding of my offers. If you start your own affiliate program it’s an absolutely fabulous way to get “out there” and in front of more people without needing social media.

Interviews – I’m starting to do a lot more interviews on websites, podcasts, telesummits, etc. I find
them so easy to do and the ocassional “get pretty” requirement is A-OK with me! If you really enjoy talking with people you might love doing interviews with people who have an audience like I do.

Blogging – Contrary to what some are saying blogging isn’t dead. I’m working on getting into a routine here on this blog so that I can establish a connection with people just like you. I hope to share my insights, lead by example, inspire and motivate. If you like the blog you might like to sign up to my free course then or buy one of my offers.

I also did a whole post on marketing without social media here < with more ideas.

Well… there’s my case for doing business without social media. As I said I’m very torn! I’m willing to reconsider my opinions. I know there are lots of people who’ve made lots of money on social media so yes, it CAN be done.

There are so many more important things more important than money to me… my decisions are guided by my values, my decision to choose freedom and my love of real, true human connections.

Hello, hey!

Did you know in 2022 I quit social media?

Like totally quit. I closed my Instagram and Facebook accounts completely. DELETED.

And it was heavenly! Really a lot better than I realize it would be. I was reading my other blog post about it today and it made me want to get off again.

What happened when I quit social media:

I had more time to be present with family. :

Stopped taking so many photos and started taking in the moments.

I had less stress because I wasn’t reading comments from mean people on the internet.

I stopped comparing myself to others because they weren’t in my face all the time sharing how great their life is and how much money they make.

My house was tidier, my laundry was folded and I explored my city more.

Those are some powerful reasons to do something about a social media addiction – again.

I QUIT Social Media << this one

I ended up on this post because I was checking my Search Engine rankings last night (which are STILL on the rise!) and found that it’s one of my most popular posts.

A LOT of people are fed up with social media.

We’re tired of being triggered.
We’re tired of scrolling useless videos.
We’re tired of seeing the negativity.

One of the things that triggers me the most is seeing good people getting bullied and saying “it’s just part of the job”. They are literally getting cyber bullied and saying they have to take it because they choose to be popular on the platform.

But I think it’s a choice. They COULD delete and block… but many don’t because negativity spreads like wildfire and that gets them more views, likes, comments (positive and negative) and makes them more money (I believe).

Yuck, yuck, yuck.

I’m a busy mom who’s trying to keep up with life right now. I don’t need to be on social media. I don’t need to worry about going viral and getting attacked because it’s “just the way it is”.

I make my money from EMAIL < so what am I doing trying to build something on a platform that treats people like the product and allows abuse? Not sure about that one?!

So I’m doing a Social Media DETOX to think about that, catch up on housecleaning, stare lovingly at my family (while they get creeped out) and more! LOL

Social Media Detox Challenge

This is a self-challenge. I’ll be accountable to ME for this – I’m sure most people on social won’t even notice I’m gone.

Below you’ll find a sign up for a 7-Day Social Media Challenge if you’d like to join me. You’ll get an email a day for 7 days and also printables to use to track and help you keep off social!

I’ll leave you with this thought:

I once asked my daughter (who was 8 at the time) if everyone jumped off a bridge would she do it, too. I know that’s an old saying and it was the first time I’d said it. Her answer: Yes because if she didn’t she’d be all alone.

And I thought that spoke of the power of human nature. I think I keep going back to social media because it FEELS more alone without it. I do it because everyone else is doing it. But the truth is I actually feel more alone ON social media than I do OFF it.

Because there are so many things that are fake in that world.

Give me the friend I can sit with and have an in-person coffee chat.
Give me the four-friend group that has sushi lunch once a month.
Give me a one on one, heart to heart.
Give me REAL.

I’m wishing that for you, too, where ever you find it!

Ang

If you’re wondering if marketing without social media is even possible I can tell you without a doubt it is.

As an online business owner since 2002 I have run my business before social media even existed!

How to Grow Your Business Without Social Media

Many people in this reddit thread will tell you it’s just not possible in this day and age to do marketing without social media. Not true!

As a business owner who does just that and who has made over six figures many years I know it’s entirely possible. My method of marketing is email. I send one daily email and teach others how to do the same.

That’s not the only way to do marketing without social media, however. There are many that myself and my customers have successfully used to build thriving businesses. Here are some of the most popular ways to do business without social media:

Advertising

Affiliates, Influencers or Partners

Social Media Manager

Interviews & Events

Search Engine Marketing

Referral Marketing

Networking & Industry Events

Guest Blog Posts

Speaking

Email Marketing

Picture of me in Barbie’s office trying to decide if
I should be marketing without social media .

Advertising

There are many different advertising opportunities out there. Facebook Ads, Google Ads and YouTube Ads are some of the most popular. You can also advertise on websites by connecting directly with the owner. Another ad type that can be very effective is within emails. You pay an agency or a business owner to place an ad inside an email campaign that they send to their email list.

Affiliates, Influencers or Partners

You can partner with business owners with skillsets you don’t. Of course Influencers are mainly marketing through social media and YouTube so you can let them do that for you. You focus on the product and create a partnership that’s a win-win for you and your partners.

Social Media Manager

Hiring a Social Media Manager is a bit of a cheat because you will be off social media personally but your business is still on it. This is a good way to go if you’re not morally opposed to social media and just don’t want to be doing it yourself.

Interviews, Podcasts & Events

If you can be interesting to others then getting interviewed is a great way to get your business out there. An interview is powerful because when people see you on video or even hear your voice then they feel more connected with you. This builds trust more quickly. If you’re not the kind of person who like that, though, there are plenty of other options for you!

Search Engine Marketing

I’ve recently become personally obsessed with search engine marketing. As far as choosing a method that doesn’t require your constant attention SEM is the opposite of social media. Social media requires so much of your time and attention while SEM allows you to do the work once, put it out there and benefit from it for a long, long time to come. Done right this can build your email list (for more marketing) or even make you immediate sales.

Referral Marketing

If you start out with just a trickle of customers you can turn that into a stream with referral marketing. Being really, really good to your customers is something that will get around. There are so few companies that actually treat their customers well so when you do – people will tell people. You can also encourage referrals with rewards or just by asking.

Networking & Industry Events

I’ve never attended a good industry event where I haven’t met at least one person who I’ve kept in contact with afterwards! This is a great way to build fast- relationships that can lead to cross-promotion, partnerships, affiliates and more. You go there knowing you have the same interests in growing complimentary business ventures. There’s often a way for that to be very mutually beneficial.

Guest Blog Posts

Some people who’ve got their marketing down and their communities build are willing to let you piggyback off their marketing. They do that because a guest blog post can be very valuable to them. If you first learn some basic SEO principals you’ll make yourself an even more attractive guest blogger. Guest blogging usually comes with the added bonus of getting a link back to your own website, helping your search engine marketing as well.

Speaking

Being a featured speaker at an in-person or online event can be a big boost to your credibility and draw attention. It’s an effective marketing method no doubt! You’ll also get links back to your website. You can use your speaking gig information on your website to showcase other’s trust in the value you can deliver.

Email Marketing

Regular email marketing is my favorite marketing method. You get in front of your potential customer in a very focused way, you can send direct links to offers and you can track easily to see how to improve your results. I’ve been sending one email a day for close to fifteen years and it has been my sole source of marketing. I’ve not needed anything else. It’s allowed me to raise a business while raising a family as I like to say!

Frequently Asked Questions about Marketing Without Social Media

Q. Can you tell me how to market without social media?

A. My advice is to pick ONE thing at a time and get really good at it. Max out your results in this area and then move on. Pick the thing that feels the easiest for you and that you think you’d have the most fun with. Contrary to popular advice I think it’s so important you ENJOY the work you’re doing. You’ll do it better and be so much more creative when you do.

Q. What are the disadvantages of social media for business?

A. I think the biggest disadvantage of social media is that it’s like one big hamster wheel. You can’t get off! What if you want a break? What if you just want to switch to another method? People with huge followings on social media also feel huge pressure to post constantly, answer private messages and reply to comments. When you have a lot of followers this is a massive amount of work and becomes all-consuming. I personally prefer to choose marketing methods that are much more laid back and flexible.

Q. What is content marketing vs social media marketing?

A. Content marketing is a pretty broad term that refers to using content to attract new customers and grow your business. It generally refers to longer content such as articles or blog posts. Content marketing is a strategy where social media marketing is indicating the medium (social media). Social media marketing is of course posting content to social media. Social media marketing more often has the goal of engagement of an existing following where content marketing is more often meant use content to attract new people.

Q. Can I really run a business without social media?

Yes! Of course you can! Running a business and marketing without social media happened all the time before social media. Now some people will say that times have changed and you can’t do that anymore. Just not true. I personally know many successful small business owners running businesses without any significant social media presence.

Should You Do Marketing Without Social Media?

To sum this all up it really is up to you to decide if you as a person and as a business want to be on social media.

Can you overcome all the personal distractions and disadvantages to use social media effectively. Or, would it be better to focus on the other methods that can provide as much advantages without the downsides.

As a prolific email marketer of many years I’ll admit I do sometimes “play” in social media marketing myself but when it’s time to make money and get serious – I ALWAYS go back to email marketing. If you’d love to learn more you can read some of my other blog posts below, you could join my paid community here or you can join my email list here.

All the best as you decide if marketing without social media is right for you!

In 2022 I decided to find out what life and business without social media would look like.

I was so tired of seeing people arguing. I had so much anxiety and I thought a lot of it was coming from social.

Disconnecting from Social Media

So I packed up my Facebook and Instagram, shut them down and decided to try life without social media.

This post was written two months into quitting social media…

Here’s my summary of life after leaving Facebook & Instagram:

How Quitting Social Media Affected Family & Friends:

I do feel like I’m missing out on seeing photos of family and friends and that sucks… I don’t like that. It’s the one major con of my leaving.

I will add I DID feel quite disconnected at first but I’ve since put focus on local connections and have been having one heck of a summer so far! Friends, family, fun and lots of activity.
(The above was written July, 2022 when full off social.)

Update August 20th, 2023: After getting BACK on social media a few months I can say that this summer I was MUCH more distracted. This took away from the quality of my connections with my family, my children and myself. Reading this and comparing REALLY shows me I need to remove myself again.

Here is a photo from the summer 2022 at Niagara Falls with my Husband and Daughter:

How Quitting Social Media Affected Mental Health:

I was getting a lot of anxiety from the mindless scroll, the negative comments, the fear of judgement on my opinions, etc. I’m glad to leave that out of my life and I think it’s better for it.

And of course I also played the comparison game on social, how do you not? I would see people looking pretty or having a clean house or on a beautiful vacation and wish I had those things. Can’t do that mess if I’m not on there.

How Quitting Social Media Affected News:

I guess I was getting all of my news from Facebook because I don’t watch news on TV (we don’t even have cable) and I don’t look up news. This hasn’t affected my life in any significant way. I hear about the big things from family and friends.

How Quitting Social Media Affected Time:

I would spend a ridiculous amount of time on Facebook & Instagram. It was almost all wasted time. I have won that time back.

How Quitting Social Media Affected Productivity:

I’ve still got a phone addiction that I’m working on but while on my phone after quitting social media I would go to my email and clear out my inbox, answer emails, respond, etc. That makes me more productive doing that alone.

How Quitting Social Media Affected Morals:

I make a stand against things I don’t want to support by not supporting them. This is why I’m vegan. So if I were to continue to use Facebook (the main culprit as I see it) and also Instagram, I’d be going against my own morals to not support something I think is pretty detrimental to society. This is NOT a judgement on anyone else. I just feel good standing up for what feels right to me.

Life Without Social Media and Society Norms:

There’s this interesting thing about bucking a social norm. I did it when I became an entrepreneur, again when I became vegan and now with leaving social. People seem so surprised and sometimes their response makes me question my decision. For the most part, though, I feel just fine not doing something even if most other people are doing it.

How Quitting Social Media Affected Business:

Here’s the thing. I maybe have only made $1,000 on social media out of over $1,000,000 in sales online. The bulk of that social income was made when I purchased a site with a Facebook group of 10,000 people that I played around with promoting for a bit.

So when I decided to cut out social I was NOT cutting out an income stream. That made it a pretty easy business decision. It hasn’t affected my business in any negative way that I can tell.

How do I make money? You know it – Email Marketing.

My main method of list-building has been participating in collaboration events – mainly bundle sales & some giveaways (same thing but free). My training on that is right here.

Quitting Social Media Conclusion:

I don’t regret leaving social media AT ALL. I think it might be one of the smartest decision I’ve made in many years.

Update: As of now (February 2025) I do have social media accounts but I’m moving, again, towards just ghosting them and staying off social media. I will start on March 1st with a 30 Day Social Media DETOX and go from there.

I have another post on Quitting Social Media. You can read this post for more details on how I left and what I’d do different this time:
How to Disconnect from Social Media

I decided to disconnect from social media and here’s what happened.

A few years ago I was feeling incredibly anxious and just so overwhelmed. At the time we were smack dab inside a pandemic that nobody had any rules for.

Remember it? People were posting all kinds of things. Attempts to help, encourage and most upsetting, CONVINCE other people to do what they thought was the “right thing”. Whatever side you stood on it was stressing and it FELT like everyone was fighting.

At that time I also took it upon myself to watch a documentary on Social Media. The doc was on Netflix called “The Social Dilemma”.

That’s when I realized that on social media sites WE are the product. The sites get us on there and grab our attention in whatever ways they can. Then they get advertisers to buy that attention in the form of ads that show up on our feeds.

I had enough! I have fed up!

So I decided to disconnect from social media.

Disconnecting from Social Media – The Steps

I would not say I did this perfectly by ANY means. Please take my “steps to disconnecting from social media” with a grain of salt, or many heapings!

Step One to Disconnect from Social Media – Save Your Content:

One of the most important things to me about disconnecting from social media was to get my images.

There were photos of my son from when he was very young and my daughter. I had photos of friends and family and vacations and I didn’t want to lose those! They were the only record I had in some cases. I hadn’t saved/backed up my photos in other ways properly.

So I set to downloading all my images from Facebook and Instagram. I googled how to do this and I recommend you do the same. Get those images onto a safe place before you ever consider deleting any social media accounts.

Step Two to Disconnect – Tell Your Friends

I did a piss poor job of this, honestly.

I think I may have alienated some people who thought I just disappeared. When I returned some really good friends didn’t seem to be bothered to connect with me again.

So my suggestion is to not do what I did!

If I could do it again I’d make a big list of all my important friends and connections. I’d connect with each one personally before leaving.

I guess you might have to do this gradually or else risk getting into Facebook jail?

What I’d do is make a template message and send it to everyone. A quick blurb about why I’m leaving and then alternative contact info. I know Facebook doesn’t like it when you mass send the same message so maybe space that out.

Step Three to Disconnect – Pull The Plug

After getting all your content and telling the important people, the next step to close your accounts (or deactivate them if you prefer that).

Because I’m in business I also DID share with my business community. Mainly being my email list. I posted some blogs on it (like this one).

I DID eventually get BACK on social media. Some of the programs I joined had Facebook groups I wanted to be in so I made a new account. If you do think you’ll need your account for that then it’s best to deactivate rather than disconnect.

I’m happy to have deactivated mine. I’m not connected to many on there now and I’m good with that.

I don’t regret closing my accounts. I’ve shared the update on that in THIS POST > Life Without Social Media.

Disconnecting from Social Media – The Mental Strength in the Decision

It took a lot of wherewithal to decide to leave social media.

There is this phenomenon where we, as humans, want to be doing what “the crowd” is doing. And the crowd is certainly doing social media!

So the big question is how to disconnect from social media gracefully. How do you disconnect without feeling like you are missing out on life with the rest of the human race?!

For me it was because I knew social was doing more damage than good at that point in time.

I needed the break. I needed to disconnect the bond I had with it…

The constant scrolling.

The comparison.

The concern over who saw my posts and who might judge me.

What is it like AFTER Disconnecting?

Well you certainly claim more hours in your day by getting off social media!

I have always been a big promoter of doing activities with my kids. I did have ever more time to do that! Great how time frees up when I wasn’t checking out what EVERYONE ELSE was doing with their life!

My favorite place is the beach and my daughter enjoys the park. So we like to go to the park by the beach:

As I mentioned I AM back on social media, meaning for me Facebook and Instagram.

I don’t have Tik Tok, didn’t sign up for the new Threads and I do have accounts on LinkedIn and Twitter (or X or whatever) but I never use them or even log in.

My Facebook is purely for groups and I’m actually thinking about leaving all those and just never logging on. I almost never post on there.

I am connected on Instagram

My Instagram, on the other hand, I do use for some social aspects, for building relationships with my potential customers and for fun!

I have an Instagram account for Living Lifestyle Freedom, one for my crochet hobby and one for being vegan. These are business accounts, all three, as I have undeveloped blogs for the crochet hobby and the vegan topic.

My preference now is to be MOSTLY disconnected from social media but still have the accounts. And when I say mostly disconnected I’m still on Instagram every day… but because I want to and it’s fun for me.

If there’s ever a point where I feel it’s bad for my mental health I wouldn’t hesitate to, again, pull the plug on the whole darn thing!

I would love to hear from YOU. If you’ve been working on disconnecting from social media, got unhooked completely or are trying to figure it out I’d love to hear how it’s going! Feel free to use the message box at the bottom of the site to connect with me!
